Judy
Apol is a sculptor of color, texture, and patterns, enhancing their
interaction with light to create stunning visual presentations.
The possibilities of these visuals are limited only by imagination
and structure. From the mixing of various elements in abstract format
to realistic liturgical interpretations, glass provides beauty and
challenge. The greatest of the challenges is to visualize how the
idea will translate into finished product.
The
art is in the design; the craft, in the construction and presentation.
Many artists didn't start out in their creative fields. They used
to be teachers, social workers, nurses or almost any other profession.
That's Judy's story also. She began with a BFA in music theory and
composition and later added a MEd in Adult Continuing Education
Administration. All throughout the growing years and into adulthood,
she was doing something creative. From learning to sew on Grandma's
treadle machine she worked her way through many different arts and
crafts. Then one day a neighbor offered free babysitting if Judy
would go with her to a stained glass class at Community Ed. That
was in 1974 and glass has been her passion since then.
The transition from hobby to full time occupation came in 1981.
There have been many transitions since that time but the use of
non-glass materials and manipulation of different elements in abstract
form has been very comfortable for Judy.
The
most recent transition period has been Judy's husband's, from 30
years in Juvenile Justice to join her in the glass business. He
does all the foiling, cleaning and heavy lifting while Judy designs,
cuts and solders.
